Shanghai Metro: choose a payment path before the gate

Use tap-and-ride, a ticket machine, a transport card or an app—but confirm your option live.

Shanghai’s municipal transport guide says riders can use international bank cards for tap-and-ride service or buy single tickets at metro-station POS machines. It lists Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay and Discover for those machines, and says international cards including Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Diners Club and JCB can be linked to the Suishenxing (SH MaaS) app. Payment acceptance and app setup are live conditions, so check the station or current official service before relying on one method.

A clear next step

  1. Choose between an international-card tap, a single ticket, a transport card or an app before entering the gate.
  2. For a single ticket, use the station machine and verify the accepted card type on-site.
  3. If using an app, complete its current card-linking and transport-code prompts before a time-sensitive ride.

Questions

What to keep in mind.

Will every overseas card work at every gate or app?

Do not assume so. The official guide lists supported payment routes and card networks, but acceptance and app setup should be checked live.
