Practical guide

Extend a China tourist visa before it expires

What L-visa holders need to prepare, when to apply, and where to submit an extension request.

Foreigners on an ordinary visa can apply for an extension through a public-security exit-entry department. This is a contingency guide for travelers who need more time in China, not a promise that an extension will be approved.

A clear next step

  1. Check the expiry date of the stay period printed on your visa and begin the process at least seven days before it ends.
  2. Prepare your valid passport or international travel document, application form, compliant photo, and evidence for the extension; L-visa holders need a travel plan and itinerary.
  3. Apply through an exit-entry department of a public-security organ and follow its request for any additional supporting materials.

What to keep in mind.

Can I extend my tourist visa after its stay period has already expired?

This NIA guide instructs applicants to apply seven days before the stay period expires. Apply before expiry and do not treat an extension as automatic.
