China hotel payments: ask about card acceptance before relying on it

A booking confirmation does not prove that a particular international card will be accepted at check-in.

The State Council’s English guide says foreign travelers can book hotels online or by telephone and pay directly with an international bank card through named online routes. It says hotels may accept RMB cash, bank cards, Alipay and Weixin Pay, but travelers who want to use Mastercard, Visa or another international card should inquire in advance. Hotel policy, card acceptance, deposits and payment timing are live conditions to confirm with the accommodation.

A clear next step

  1. Confirm your reservation directly with the accommodation before arrival.
  2. Ask whether your specific international card is accepted at check-in and whether a deposit or payment timing applies.
  3. Carry a backup payment method rather than assuming a booking channel’s payment option applies at the property.

Questions

What to keep in mind.

Does an online reservation mean the hotel will accept my international card in person?

No. The guide says travelers should inquire in advance about Mastercard, Visa or other international-card acceptance. Confirm the property’s current policy and retain a backup method.
