Practical guide

China cash and currency exchange: use an official exchange point and keep small notes

Make RMB a backup payment method, then check the live counter or ATM option where you arrive.

The State Council’s English guide says overseas visitors can exchange foreign currency for RMB at commercial-bank outlets, money changers and self-service currency-exchange machines at entry ports and elsewhere displaying the Exchange logo. It also says visitors can withdraw RMB using international bank cards at ATMs and request small RMB notes or a mixed-denomination change purse from commercial-bank counters. Rates, available currencies, card support and counter hours are live conditions.

A clear next step

  1. Use a commercial bank, money changer or machine that displays the Exchange logo, or a compatible ATM.
  2. Check the current rate, currency availability, ID requirements and card compatibility before confirming the transaction.
  3. Keep some smaller RMB notes as a backup and do not rely on a static guide for a counter’s hours or inventory.

Questions

What to keep in mind.

Can I assume every airport counter or ATM will support my card and currency?

No. The official guide identifies exchange and ATM routes, but live card acceptance, currency inventory, rates and operating hours must be checked at the point of use.
