Renting a car in China: line up documents before you reserve

A foreign licence alone is not the published rental checklist.

The Ministry of Commerce’s English guide says foreign travelers renting cars need a passport or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, a valid Chinese driver’s licence and an international or domestic credit card. It says first-time renters need identity-document verification at least one working day in advance. Confirm the rental company’s exact current requirements before booking.

A clear next step

  1. Gather your passport or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, valid Chinese driver’s licence and payment card.
  2. Arrange the first-time identity verification at least one working day before the rental if required.
  3. Confirm current vehicle, insurance and pickup conditions with the rental provider.
