Beijing Subway: try contactless overseas-card entry before buying a separate ticket

The city says its fare gates support listed overseas cards, but use a backup if the live transaction fails.

Beijing’s municipal transport notice says all operating urban rail lines and fare gates support 24/7 contactless payment with overseas bank cards. It identifies Mastercard and Visa as launched services and also says self-service machines can be used to buy tickets for companions with an overseas card. Card eligibility, network availability and live gate behavior should still be confirmed at the station.

A clear next step

  1. Use the contactless card directly at a fare gate if your card is one of the currently supported types.
  2. If traveling with companions, check the station machine for the current overseas-card ticket-purchase option.
  3. Keep a backup payment route such as BEIJING PASS or a station counter if the transaction does not go through.

Questions

What to keep in mind.

Will every foreign bank card be accepted?

Do not assume so. Use the stated supported card types and confirm the live station option, with a backup method available.
